High up on the bell tower gallery at Notre Dame are 54 carved "grotesques" or "chimera" - carved stone statues that decorates the balustrade, commonly referred to as Gargoyles. Some are thought to ward off evil demons, while others are said to be monstrous devils denied entrance to the holy sanctuary within.
This set contains 10 of the best known figures from the western face of the North Bell Tower - including the famous "Sad Vampire" or "Melancholy Demon", known in French as "Le Stryge" - as well as a few from the inner courtyard and east side. Age and the elements have caused several of the statues to deteriorate and crumble through the years - or even disappear completely - so that there is not enough detail left, or even decent photo reference, to reproduce them accurately.
Consequently, figures 5, 9, and 11 have been replaced with others from more hidden recesses not often seen by the general public, including the wonderful Griffin (#44) from a rear inner corner, and the Eagle Clutching Prey (#12) from an inner courtyard alcove. The latter replaces the Great Sparrow (#11), which has sadly been "restored" to a garishly cartoonish mockery of the original. Please see the promo images for further details on the historical placement of these stonework creatures.
Each of the ten statues are provided as zeroed props for your use in any scene you like. However, pose presets have also been provided to quickly place each figure in its proper location on the Notre Dame Exterior gallery balustrade, for those who have that set. But please feel free to move them about as you see fit, or as your scene requires.
Meticulously recreated in ZBrush with attention to accurate detail and expressive definition, these ten Gothic Gargoyles stand ready to decorate and defend your graveyard, mausoleum, mansion or museum!
